Overcoming the Fear of Speaking in Front of Your Professors

Overcoming the Fear of Speaking in Front of Your ProfessorsWhen I first began writing college essays, I was extremely apprehensive about the whole process. In other words, I was afraid that my teacher would make me do a lousy job! Well, I didn't find this to be the case. The key to writing high quality college essays is to get rid of those pesky feelings and fears. I believe that these are the main reasons that college students lose their first attempts at essay writing. The fact is that if you aren't afraid of speaking to your teacher, then it will be much easier for you to write a solid paper. By getting used to having a fear of speaking in front of your peers, you can develop that fear and come up with a strategy that will help you overcome it.The first thing that you need to do is to deal with your anxiety. Yes, as you know, when you are in the middle of writing your essay, that anxiety can lead to thoughts of quitting and thinking that you can't write well. Unfortunately, this ca n destroy your ability to speak to your instructor and the entire class. To combat this, try to keep an open mind, and remind yourself that it will take time to work through all of your concerns.Another key factor in developing a fear is focusing on the task at hand. For example, if you are in the middle of a math class, try to let all of your worries go and just focus on the subject at hand. You can ask a math class adviser or read about your topic, and see how it can be made easier for you to speak in front of others. Take some time to formulate a 'to do' list and figure out what needs to be done, in order to get through the assignment.Anxiety doesn't have to be a problem for you to give a speech, write a letter, or essay. In fact, it's one of the best things that you can do when you find yourself bogged down with thoughts about how to write that essay, or worries about how others are going to respond to it. It helps to have someone who can talk to you, as you figure out the steps to take in writing a strong essay. Even if you feel self-conscious about sharing your thoughts with others, it will help to have someone to give you feedback. However, if you find that your anxiety is taking over your thoughts, then there is something that you can do. One solution is to find a friend to speak with, who can give you support, as you write your essay. This will help you avoid your fears and develop an anxiety-free mindset to the task at hand.Another way to overcome anxiety and build up confidence when writing college essays is to create a note pad with pen and paper, so that you can jot down all of your thoughts. Then, do the same thing with a pen and paper, but include your assignment. Once you start writing, it's like 'peeling the onion,' so to speak. Once you see the layers of the essay beginning to form, it will make it easier to remove the layers of anxiety and get into the 'why' of your essay.Another way to overcome anxiety, when writing college essays, is to foc us on the big picture. You can take some time to focus on one thought or idea and make sure that you give it the proper amount of time. If you have to rearrange your thoughts for the subject of your essay to move forward, then do it. The end result will be a well-written, organized, well-rounded, and most importantly - a well-structured essay that speaks to your professor, the class, and anyone else who reads it.
